Tool Concepts

Brushless vs. Brushed Motors

Brushless motors use electronic control instead of carbon brushes. This reduces friction and heat, improves efficiency, extends run time, and increases tool life.

Brushed motors use carbon brushes to conduct power to windings. They cost less, work well for light to medium tasks, and need more maintenance with shorter battery run time.

Battery Types

the Amp Hours (Ah) is the capacity of the battery to store energy. Batteries with teh same Ah rating will run about hte same length of time at the same load. Some of the batteries can deliver more energy at one time. That allows some power-hungry tools to work better.

Cordless Hammer Drills

These look like ordinary drills but have an extra hammering mechanism that rapidly drives the bit forward as it spins. That added percussion makes a big difference when drilling into hard materials like brick, block, or poured concrete. You can still use them for wood and metal by turning the hammer action off, but the extra gearing and durability make them heavier and more robust than standard drill drivers.
